Latrobe's Showalter Opera House played host to some of Broadway's finest productions. Famous politicians appeared there. The Opera House was the center of the town's cultural activities for more than 30 years. High school commencement exercises were held there as well as G.A.R. patriotic programs.
The Opera House was a magnificent structure. It had a capacity of more than 1,000. The theater was located on the second floor, and it had a balcony and a gallery known as peanut heaven. The aisles and stairs were carpeted and the seats were upholstered.
